In a blow to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the municipal elections, the party will now be contesting from 268 seats instead of the total 272. During the scrutiny of applications on Wednesday, the State Election Commission rejected the nominations of four candidates from the party due to submission of incomplete documents, an official said.

The four wards include Baprola, Vinod Nagar, Kishanganj, and Abul Fazal Enclave. The Congress, too, lost a seat, after one of their candidates' nomination was rejected by the Commission. Senior BJP leaders, however, remained doubtful about the Vinod Nagar ward, as they believe that the candidate had submitted the complete affidavit and all supporting documents. The party leaders said they will approach the Commission in this regard.

In addition, the party plans to support independent candidates from these wards. "We will support independent candidates from these wards and hope to get a good response," a party leader said.
