Metro starts cleanliness initiatives to improve travelling experience

Keeping in tandem with the numerous activities it routinely undertakes to improve the travelling experience of its commuters, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has started a number of initiatives recently covering prominent Metro stations and all of its trains, dealing primarily with cleanliness.

The objective, according to the DMRC officials, is to promote cleanliness standards and address various other issues around Metro premises to make the travel experience pleasant and hassle-free for its commuters.

The rail corporation has employed additional housekeeping staff at a number of Metro stations across the network, including Shahdara, Welcome, Kashmere Gate, New Delhi, Noida City Centre, Karol Bagh, Anand Vihar, Laxmi Nagar, Govindpuri and Badarpur. The staff has been entrusted with the job to keep the immediate station surroundings clean and prevent the public from dirtying the area. "This extra housekeeping initiative outside the Metro station premises is in line with the Swachh Bharat Mission, and it will help in providing a pleasant ambiance to the commuters when they enter or exit from the stations," according to a senior DMRC official.

The move has been also taken in view of the chaos at the busy Metro stations like Noida City Centre, Botanical Garden, Huda City Centre as many auto drivers, rickshaw pullers, and even beggars block the entrance and exits.

The DMRC has deployed marshals outside the entrance and exit gates of prominent Metro stations like Dilshad Garden, Pitampura, AIIMS, Hauz Khas, Malviya Nagar, Karol Bagh, Uttam Nagar East, Laxmi Nagar, GTB Nagar, Anand Vihar etc, to keep a watch on unauthorised people blocking the station access and creating bottlenecks for passengers in the process.

The rail body is also in touch with the local civic and police authorities to address the problem.

In an effort to keep the trains spotlessly clean during the passenger services, it has been decided to clean them after every trip at terminal stations throughout the day. For this, specially trained housekeeping staff has been deployed to clean the train while it is in the process of reversal.
