After a 34-year-old man was shot dead by two unidentified assailants in southeast Delhi's Taimoor Nagar on Sunday, agitated family members and locals blocked the roads on Monday demanding justice for the deceased.

The incident took place in broad daylight on Sunday. In the CCTV camera footage, two men were spotted walking down a lane with guns in their hands. When the deceased identified as Rupesh Besoya, who was playing cricket with two kids and three other children from the neighbourhood, approached the two, one of them shot him at point blank range in front of the kids.

Rupesh was rushed to Holy Family Hospital from where the police took him to AIIMS. However, he was declared dead on arrival at AIIMS.

The murder triggered outrage amongst locals who staged a protest in the neighbourhood on Sunday night. They burnt two motorcycles and pelted stones at the police personnel who were trying to manage the crowd. In the melee, a policeman was injured and is currently in the hospital, said the police.

On Monday, the family members and ladies of the area blocked Mathura road by putting the body on the road demanding justice. The police have deployed extra forces in the area to maintain law and order in the area.

"We want cops to arrest the culprits, who are allegedly drug peddlers, at the earliest. While the deceased's wife should be given a government job, educational expenses of his children should be borne by the government. He was the lone bread earner of the family, so compensation should be provided," said Renu, Rupesh's elder brother's wife.

The police have registered two cases — one under section 302(murder) of the Indian Penal Code and the other against the protesting people who took law and order in their hands. The police have formed five teams to probe into the matter.

"We have detained a few suspects for questioning. While the car in which they fled was recovered by the roadside in north Delhi area. The accused will be arrested soon," said Chinmoy Biswal, Deputy Commissioner of police (southeast).

A vigilance enquiry has been ordered under supervision of Add DCP to probe the role of local police in Taimoor Nagar incident.

Locals and protestors alleged that law and order is a big problem in the area as druggists are often found wandering in the neighbourhood. However, despite several complaints, no action has been taken.
