An eerie calm descended on the road near the Ghazipur landfill, which caved in on Friday killing two people, as the disaster management personnel worked silently on Saturday to clear the garbage and rescue any person still trapped under.
An East Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) official present on the spot said the incessant rain had become a hurdle in the operation. "We continued the rescue operation on Friday night. We used four life detecting machines and more than 20 people were continuously involved in the operation," he said.
Cranes were being used to clear the garbage while local police had a busy day handling the crowd that had gathered at the spot. Nearly 18 CRPF personnel were also deployed at the spot to maintain law and order.
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) PRO Krishan Kumar said the heavy rainfall over the last two days was behind the incident. According to Joint Commissioner of Police (Eastern Range) Ravindra Yadav, no casualties were reported on Saturday.
According to the owner of one of the largest slaughterhouses in east Delhi, however, the incident had no impact on the business as the city celebrated Eid.
