Former TV journalist Deepanshu Dubey died at Delhi government's Hedgewar Hospital after he was sent to buy his own medicines — even as he was having a heart attack. The only bread-earning member of the family, Dubey had severe chest pains on Friday and so he rushed himself to the emergency room of the nearest hospital and asked his friend to meet him there.

After a preliminary examination, he was asked to bring medicines from the pharmacy where he died from the stroke. Meanwhile, his family on Monday filed an FIR against the hospital for medical negligence. They will also approach the Delhi Medical Council to look into the matter.

Dubey, a resident of Kanpur, had been living in Delhi for over a decade while working as a news anchor with different reputed news channels. Recently in January, he had also started his own news portal. His family included his parents, sister, and a new wife.Incidentally, Dubey had a similar heart attack last year when he had to be rushed to a private hospital and given an injection.

"I am still in the state of shock. As soon as he called me, I rushed and reached the hospital in 30 minutes because I knew of his heart condition. When I reached, three or four doctors were huddled over him, pumping his chest," said his friend Anjuman Gusain," adding, "Some people at the spot, including a cop, told me that he fell while standing in the queue of the pharmacy. That's when I realised what had happened. How could the hospital staff ask a patient to go and buy his own medicines? We had been friends for many years now, working in the same field. It is like I lost my brother."

Dubey's body reached his hometown in Kanpur on Saturday, where his last rites were performed. His cousins, however, have been in the Capital, filing the FIR against the hospital.

The hospital Medical Superintendent, Dr Sushil Kumar, remained unavailable for comment.
