The teachers also alleged that the administration did not allow any discussions on "crucial issues" during the meetings and had misrepresented the minutes of the meetings
Teachers at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) are divided on the recently implemented minimum attendance rule for all the regular students. While a section of teachers led-by the JNU Teachers Association (JNUTA) held 'akrosh dharna' against the "undemocratic and unilateral" functioning of the Vice-Chancellor (V-C), another group of teachers accused the latter of spreading "misinformation".
Earlier in the day, JNUTA members, along with hundreds of other teachers and students orgainsed a dharna. The teachers rejected V-C Jagadesh Kumar's claims that the attendance issue was "discussed at length" and "passed by a majority opinion" during the Academic Council (AC) meeting held on December 1, 2017.
"Attendance is just the tip of the iceberg. There have been many instances in the last two years where the AC proceedings have been circumvented. Both AC, as well as JNUTA members, have been raising objections about the manner in which these meetings are conducted," said JNUTA president, Sonajharia Minz.
The teachers also alleged that the administration did not allow any discussions on "crucial issues" during the meetings and had misrepresented the minutes of the meetings. "Instead of considering the objections raised by the teachers, the administration has been issuing orders to implement the mandatory attendance rule," said JNUTA secretary, Sudhir Kumar Suthar.
JNUTA demanded an immediate withdrawal of the circulars issued on attendance and asked the V-C to convene the AC meeting on February 23, as was scheduled earlier.
Later in the day, another group of teachers held a press brief and accused JNUTA of spreading "false information" regarding the attendance rule. "JNU administration is only formalising the procedures of attendance as prescribed by the UGC as well as the JNU ordinance." said Atul Johri, a professor at School of Life Sciences."The issue was discussed in details during the AC meeting. We appeal the JNU students and teachers to help the administration to implement it," he added.
