The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) on Monday alleged that its Vice President was assaulted by Delhi Police women constables at Tuglak Road police station. The students were taken to the police station after it staged a protest near Jammu and Kashmir Bhavan against the rape and murder of an eight-year-old Kashmiri girl.

According to the students, a woman constable dragged JNUSU vice president Simone Zoya Khan inside a room and beat her up. "We were taken from the protest site to Tuglak Road Police Station. Within the station premises, I was dragged inside a room and was punched on the face and beaten up," she said. The students' body will file a complaint against the constable.

"This kind of behaviour is uncalled for from the police whom citizens approach for justice. If this is the state of Delhi Police which calls itself gender sensitive then we can understand what does a "Beti Bacho Beti Padao" mean in our country" Khan said, adding several other students were also beaten up by the police at the station.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) BK Singh, however, denied the charges and said it was Khan who assaulted the women police officers. "It's just an attempt to take mileage. Rather the Vice President assaulted women police on duty. They were not at all peaceful and disciplined during the protest. They scaled police barricade, blocked traffic and indulged in unruly behaviour. Police acted and handled them with a lot of patience and restraint," he said.
