It was Heptulla's maiden visit to the campus after becoming the first woman Chancellor of the university. She also unfurled a National Flag hoisted on a 102m pole.

Recalling her grandfather Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, one of the founders of JMI, Heptulla said: "Jamia is in my blood. It is a historical moment that I have the honour of inaugurating the National Flag at an institution that has a rich nationalist past and has been at the forefront of the freedom struggle."She further said: "I would like to connect JMI's coveted AJK Mass Communication Research Centre and the Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research."

The Wall of Heroes initiative has been launched under the Vidhya Veerta Abhiyan campaign of the Ministry of Human Resource Development. The resolution to install National Flags on campuses was passed last year by the Ministry to "instill nationalism and pride in students".
