Resident doctors at the Delhi government's Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital refused to dance for the 'Happy Therapy' program inaugurated by the State Health Minister at the hospital on Thursday.

The hospital started the initiative with an aim to improve doctor-patient relationship. Cabinet minister, Satyendra Jain, confirmed that soon other Delhi government hospitals will also follow in the footsteps.

“With lesser resources and extra working hours, dancing with the patients was not possible,” said Dr Anand Chopra, president, Resident Doctors' Association, GTB Hospital. “Firstly, we receive patients from all the areas in East Delhi, including notorious slums, and if our female residents dance, they will have a sense of insecurity which might affect their work. Secondly, we have long patient queues, adding dance to

our routine is not possible. I say this on behalf of all resident doctors that we refuse to dance in the wards,” he added.

The initiative is inspired by from a Brazilian hospital video. “Doctor, paramedical staff and patients can dance together for half an hour a day. Right now these initiatives have started in the same ward of GTB, but Delhi government wants to start it in other hospitals soon. This is a commendable step. It is extremely necessary to maintain the lost faith towards doctors with the rumours and attacks happening in the hospitals of Delhi,” said Satyendra Jain, Delhi Health Minister.

The doctor's fraternity, however, feel cheated as they were not informed of the initiative before the launch of the program.

They believe that with good basic hygiene at the hospital, proper treatment, availability of medicines in the pharmacy, the hospital can, anyway, help the patients feel better and trust their health carers. If needed, soothing music can be played in the wards.
