While the Capital's students may not have performed as well as expected there was a silver lining in the cloud . In a welcome trend, the city's government schools, once again outperformed the private ones.
"Delhi govt schools get 92.44% in Class 10 results; this is 3.19% higher than 2016 and 1.5% higher than CBSE national average," Delhi Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister Manish Sisodia said in a series of tweets.
"428 students of Delhi govt schools have got 10/10 CGPA and 282 (govt) schools have got 100% results," he added.
Though many students have scored a perfect 10 CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) in CBSE class X examination, the pass percentage of the national capital slipped from last year's 91.06 percent to 78.09, a fall of 13.67 per cent.
A total of 3,67,699 students appeared from Delhi for the exams held in March, out of which 2,87,147 students have cleared it.
Educationists point out that the low pass percentage is part of a worrying trend, as it has been steadily declining over the years. From a pass percentage of 98.40 in 2013, the number slumped to 91.76 per cent last year. This has further slipped to 78.09 this year.
Some believe that private students, or students who opt for open learning are to blame. "Out of 2,37,872 students, who opted for school-based exams, 2,23,645 have passed which makes their passing percentage approximately 94 per cent. Similarly, the passing percentage of students who appeared in the board-based exams is approximately 95. Things went wrong with passing percentage of the private candidates," said Ashok Pandey, Chairperson National Progressive School's conference and principal of Ahlcon International School Mayur Vihar.
As per data released by the board, out of 64,570 students, who opted for open learning, only 1,654 have passed. "That means 2.56 per cent of private candidates have passed the examination that collectively brings down the passing percentage of the national capital," he said.
I was overjoyed at scoring a perfect 10. I have taken PCM and aspire to become an engineer or an architect
— Naomi Rajwanshi, Class X, 10 CGPA
Scoring 10 CGPA felt like a thirsty person getting water. I've chosen PCM and aspire to become an engineer
— Oshi Raj, Class X, 10 CGPA
I expected a 9.4 or 9.8. I've taken PCM along with Physical Education and aspire to join a good engineering college
— Siddhant Singh, Class X, 10 CGPA
The drastic fall of the overall pass percentage of Class X students in the Capital is a big cause for concern
Students opting for open learning cannot be the only reason and schools need to think hard
