A 31-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the 7th floor of the IRD building inside the Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi on Friday morning. Police said the man was an IIT Delhi alumni and was dealing with depression for the last five years. He had left his house telling his mother that he was going to meet someone at the IIT on Friday morning. No suicide note was found, police said.

According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Anshum Gupta, an IIT-D pass out of 2010 batch, who had gone to meet some at the institution.

"We received a call at around 10.55 am about a man lying in a pool of blood. We reached the spot and rushed him to AIIMS Trauma Centre where he was declared brought dead on arrival," said Milind Dumbere, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West).

Initial investigation has revealed that Gupta was undergoing treatment for depression from the past 5 years and was unhappy with his professional life and kept leaving his jobs frequently.

Police said the family has stated that Gupta had worked with a technology giant in the US from 2012-15 after which he quit and came back to India. Gupta also worked in Noida for a while and quit the job a few months ago.

"Currently, Gupta was unemployed and is survived by his mother and younger brother. While leaving the house, Gupta told his mother that he was going to the institute to meet someone, and when the mother asked him whom he was meeting, he said that she did not know the person," said a senior police officer.

Police are now enquiring why Gupta went to the IIT and whether he met someone on the campus. His body has been sent for post-mortem. Gupta had completed his five-year dual BTech-MTech degree course from IIT- Delhi.
