In a significant step ahead of Lok Sabha elections, the Congress on Thursday brought back former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit as the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president. The three-time chief minister succeeded Ajay Maken who resigned from the post citing health reasons.

Senior party leader PC Chacko also confirmed the development. "Sheila Dikshit has been appointed as Delhi Congress President. Devendra Yadav, Rajesh Lilothia and Haroon Yusuf have been appointed as working presidents," Chacko said.

Meanwhile, Maken congratulated Dikshit saying that under her leadership the Congress party will play the role of a powerful opposition against the governments in the national Capital and at the Centre.

The 80-year-old Congress old hand served as chief minister of Delhi for three consecutive terms till 2013 when Congress lost elections.

After Maken resigned as the Delhi party chief, rumours were rife of the former CM being the front-runner for the post of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president. Dixit, on her part, said she is not averse to shoulder any responsibility given by the party.

On Thursday, Maken, along with AICC in-charge of Delhi affairs PC Chacko met Rahul Gandhi to submit his resignation letter.

Maken, who has been suffering from "painful orthopaedic ailment", is believed to have cited health reasons for his resignation.

The change of guard in Delhi Congress comes at a significant time as the country goes to polls in a few months. The Congress is hoping to secure big wins across all the seven LS seats.
