The observational study which was conducted from April 2015 to June 2017 has been published in the recent edition of Current Medicine Research & Practice.
“Erectile Dysfunction (ED) in men has commonly seen the complication in Type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is described as the condition due to which there is incompetence to accomplish and sustain erection which is needed to have satisfactory sexual intercourse. ED has a high prevalence in diabetics and occurs in the early ages of the diabetic population as compared to non-diabetics,” Dr Atul Kakkar, Vice Chairperson, Department of Medicine, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.
Doctors reveal that the interesting findings of the study were that the longer duration of diabetes was the risk of erectile dysfunction. 43.6 per cent of patients with diabetes duration less than five years had ED with only 3.6 per cent having severe ED. While 83 per cent of those with the duration between 6-10 years had ED and with 10.9 per cent having severe ED. In patients with diabetes duration more than ten years, 78.6 per cent has ED with 16.4 per cent having severe ED.
“In this study, we assessed the severity of ED among male diabetics, based on the Sexual Health Inventory for Men (SHIM) questionnaire. The SHIM questionnaire uses five sexual function components which include erection, orgasm, desire for sex, intercourse satisfaction and overall satisfaction.” said Dr Manu Gupta, Author and Senior Consultant, Department of Urology, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.
