The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has sent a bill of Rs 9 lakh for the treatment of a four-year-old rape victim from Madhya Pradesh who had been undergoing treatment at the hospital since five months.

On July 3, the girl was airlifted from Satna district of Madhya Pradesh and brought to AIIMS in New Delhi in a critical condition. She was allegedly abducted from her house while she was asleep, and was raped by 23-year-old Mahendra Singh Gond. Gond, a resident of Panna village in Uchehra area of Satna district, was allegedly a close friend of her father's.

After being raped, she was allegedly left behind in the jungle as the accused allegedly thought she was dead. But when she was found the next morning, the girl was rushed to a nearby hospital. A team of surgeons from Jabalpur stabilised her and conducted a life-saving surgery in Satna before sending her to AIIMS.

After several months of treatment, doctors first informed the state government that she had been treated and was ready to be discharged on the initial discharge date of October 18. Along with this, a Rs 2.99 lakh bill was also sent. However, it was later decided to keep her under observation for two more months. The current bill includes the treatment cost and other expenditure.

"We have also requested the state government to send in local police to take the child back to her hometown. She will be sent only in the presence of the local police. We had plans to release her on December 4 itself, but it has been decided to discharge her on December 17 after the election results are counted," a source said.

Figures show Madhya Pradesh is one of the most unsafe and dangerous places for women in the country, with one woman being raped in the state almost every two hours.

There were 5,300 incidents of rape in 2017, up from 4,882 cases recorded in the previous year, registering an increase of nearly eight per cent, according to the State Crime Records Bureau.
