Delhi's Ram Manohar Lohia doctors remove 6.48-kg tumor from kidney

In a rare case, a 6.48-kilogram tumor was removed from the kidney of a 50-year-old patient from Bareilly at the government-run Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in New Delhi. Doctors revealed that the patient was brought in with complaints of pain and lump in his abdomen. In the Urology Department, examination revealed a large firm mass in his left abdomen.

Thorough investigations planned by the Department of Urology, headed by Dr Rajiv Sood, confirmed a large kidney tumor. Upon surgery, the tumor which was removed from the man's kidney was 29x 23x 16 centimeters in size and weighed 6.48 kilograms.

According to Dr Umesh Sharma, assistant professor in the Urology department at RML hospital and also the main operating surgeon, such mammoth-sized kidney tumor cases are rare and difficult to remove.

"This tumor had grown so huge that it had displaced his intestines to the right side of his body. The tumor was compressing on all structures of his abdomen including his liver, stomach, and spleen. It had to be removed in total, and at the same time, the blood loss had to be reduced to a minimum," said Dr Sharma.

Doctors involved in the surgery, also shared that even in the Guinness World Records, the largest kidney tumor removed is 5.5 kilograms and the surgery was performed by a Mumbai-based Urologist, Dr Ajit Sawant, at the Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital in Mumbai's Sion in 2017.

Dr Umesh Sharma has now applied to Guinness World Records to recognise their accomplishment.

The procedure was completed in four hours by a team of urologists and estimated blood loss was 500 milliliters. The patient was extubated in the operating room by the anesthesia team headed by Dr Ravinder Kaur.
