A gang of armed robbers waylaid a petrol pump owner near a bank in Rohini on Monday afternoon and snatched his bag containing around Rs 29 lakh. The police have registered a case of robbery at the Sultanpuri Police Station, and are trying to track down the criminals.
The incident occurred around 12 pm. The victim, Anil Sharma, was going to deposit the cash into the bank when at least four criminals on three bikes stopped his Mercedes car.
Threatening to open fire, they demanded the cash bag. The victim claimed that one of the criminals even opened fire but his pistol got jammed. The accused then fled from the spot on their bikes. The victim raised an alarm and also tried to chase the robbers, who managed to escape.
The incident which took place on the main Kanjhawala road created panic in the area. The police have collected the footage from CCTV cameras installed in the vicinity and are trying to identify the men. The cops suspect the accused could be locals from outer Delhi.
The police are also suspecting the role of an insider who may have tipped off the criminals about the victim's travel plans to the bank. The employees of the petrol pump are being questioned and their movements analyzed. The role of a former employee is also being looked into, sources said.
