Delhi: Kingpin involved in human trafficking case arrested

A 33-year-old man allegedly the kingpin of the syndicate, involved in sending Nepali girls to various Gulf countries by illegal means, has been arrested following a brief a chase from Kashmiri Gate area on Saturday evening. Police said that the accused had fled to Nepal, to evade arrest. The accused is also involved in the case in which the team of Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) had rescued 16 Nepali girls from Munirka Village, Delhi in July, 2018.

According to the police, the accused has been identified as Lopsang Lama, presently residing at Wazirabad, Delhi and originally hails from Okhal Doonga, East Nepal, who carried a reward of Rs one lakh on his arrest.

"The girls were confined in a rented house of Lopsang Lama and his associates for the last about 20-22 days for trafficking them to various Gulf countries through illegal means under the pretext of giving them jobs. He had confiscated their passports and other documents. The rescued girls also informed that Lama had trafficked five Nepalese girls to Kuwait and two girls to Iraq for 15 days," said Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, deputy commissioner of police, special cell.

However since the incident the accused had been absconding. "We received a tip off that Lama would come to meet his associate near ISBT Kashmiri Gate. At about 7:20 pm, a person was spotted coming from Buddhist Monastery side. On seeing the police team, he fled towards Kudasiya bank of Yamuna river but we managed to nab him," said Yadav.

During interrogation he revealed his identity and confessed his involvement in the human trafficking case. "Lama disclosed that he, along with his brother-in-law and other associates are running a racket of human trafficking by sending Nepalese girls to Gulf countries like Kuwait, Dubai, Iraq etc. He used to receive a handsome commission for trafficking girls. The girls were also sexually exploited," said Yadav.

Police said that after the case, the accused fled to Sanauli and hid there for some months. He came to Delhi again and made his new hideout in Wazirabad and was planning to start human trafficking racket afresh.
