The Delhi government has found a new best friend for senior citizens — the humble cow. The animal that has made and toppled governments will now be sharing space with the elderly in the national Capital as Delhi Development Minister Gopal Rai has announced that the government would open PG hostels for cows and build a gaushala-cum-old age home where the elderly would live in their company.

As part of this unique animal welfare programme, the minister has announced a new policy for animals and suggested the Delhi government rename Animal Husbandry unit as the Animal Health and Welfare Department.

"For the first time, the Delhi government has decided to formulate a policy for animals. After examining the work of the Animal Husbandry unit, we've suggested to rename it as Animal Health and Welfare Policy," the minister wrote on his Twitter handle.

Addressing the media on Wednesday, Rai said: "We had five cow shelters, one of which was cancelled after receiving a complaint. There are four now. Plans are afoot to open the most advanced cow shelter in Ghumanhera, it will be a 'gaushala' cum old age home where the elderly will be in the company of cows. An 18-acre plot will be allocated for this." The minister added that the government has plans to tag animals with microchips to monitor their location, health and vaccination records. There are so many welfare policies for people but no policy for animal welfare," he added.

Detailing about the 'PG hostel' for cows, Rai explained, "These places will accommodate cows abandoned by their owners. Also, the owners will have to pay for the PG services where the government will look after the cattle's fodder, treatment and health facilities."

Rai further said that the government will inaugurate 'round the clock' hospital for cattle near Tis Hazari on January 16.

"It is one of the major projects initiated by the government and it will run on a pilot basis for a few days," he added.
