Couple found dead in flat in Govindpuri

Unhappy over not having a child, a man and his wife allegedly committed suicide in their flat in Govindpuri area of south-east Delhi early on Sunday. The two hung themselves from the ceiling, police said. The couple was married for two years. No suicide note has been found.

The deceased have been identified as Mohit Bagga (30) and Arpita Bagga (28). Arpita had apparently messaged a relative saying she was ending her life and that is when the relatives landed at the flat around 10 am and broke open the door to discover the two bodies. While Mohit was hanging, Arpita's rope had allegedly snapped and the body had fallen down when the relatives reached, police said.

Police have initiated an inquest into the incident and a magisterial enquiry is also on to ascertain the reason behind the step. The woman's family live in Varanasi and have been informed about the incident. A post-mortem will be conducted after they arrive in the city on Monday.

The police suspect that the childless couple was going through financial constraints also as Mohit had incurred a loss in the business. He was currently unemployed.

"A PCR call was received at Govindpuri police station today at 10:50 am regarding the suicide. The police team reached the spot and found the door was already broken by the relatives. There were ligature marks around the woman's neck," said Chinmoy Biswal, DCP (South-East).

"As the couple was married for less than seven years, the area SDM and tehsildar were informed to conduct proceedings under section 176 CrPC and dead bodies have been shifted to AIIMS mortuary," Biswal said.
