Delhi University (DU) has released datesheet for its School of Open Learning (SOL) students even as classes for several courses, for the session 2017-18, are yet to begin. The students are clueless about their syllabi as the university has not even released their study material so far.

Twenty-year-old Kuldeep Kumar, a second year BA (Hons) Political Science student at SOL, is among the thousands of students who are in a fix upon receiving the date sheet. "I enrolled myself for the second year in September last year. And, nothing has happened till now. We have neither received any update on our classes nor have any study material been issued. The university has now abruptly slapped this date sheet on our faces," he said.

According to the datesheet, the examinations will be conducted in May.

Similarly, students of second and third-year BA (Hons) English are also waiting for any notification for their classes to begin. "This is victimisation of correspondent students. While the new semesters have begun for regular students, the SOL students, coming from deprived and marginalised sections, are still waiting for classes to start," said Sneha Singh, a third-year English (Hons) student.

Anticipating "mass failure" of students in the coming examinations, hundreds of students gathered outside the office of executive director (SOL), H C Pokhriyal on Monday. "The move will inevitably lead to mass failure and then mass drop out of students. This amounts to a blatant discrimination against those students who already are facing marginalisation in terms of educational opportunities," said Harish Gautam, second-year BA (prog) SOL student.

Despite several attempts, Pokhriyal did not respond for a comment.

"The executive director met us and promised to take corrective measures immediately. However, the damage has been already been done and it would affect the results of students badly," said Gautam, who is also a member of Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS), a students'body.

In November, last year, students had raised the similar issues with the authorities but to no avail. "The authorities had promised to take all remedial measures then as well but nothing has happened so far," he added.
