Centre suspends 2 Delhi govt officials, showcause notice to 2 others over 'serious lapse' during coronavirus lockdown

The Union Home Ministry said it has initiated disciplinary proceedings against all four officers of Delhi government.

The Centre on Sunday suspended two senior Delhi government officials and issued showcase notice to two others for 'serious lapses' in duty during the ongoing nationwide lockdown to fight against the coronavirus outbreak.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs said it has initiated disciplinary proceedings against all four officers of Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD).

"It has been brought to the notice of the competent authority that the following officers, who were responsible to ensure strict compliance to the instructions issued by Chairperson, National Executive Committee, formed under Disaster Management Act 2005 regarding containment of the spread of Covid-19, have prima facie failed to do so," the Home Ministry said in an official statement.

"These officers have failed to ensure public health and safety during the lockdown restrictions to combat Covid-19. Due to the serious lapse in performance of their duties, the competent authority has initiated disciplinary proceedings against the following officers," the ministry further added.

While an Aditional Chief Secretary with Delhi government's Transport Department and Principal Secretary, Finance have been suspended with immediate effect, an Additional Chief Secretary, Home and Land Buildings Departments, and SDM Seelampur have been issued showcause notice.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had last week announced a 21-day nationwide lockdown till April 14 to combat the spread of novel coronavirus. 

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), there are 1071 confirmed cases of coronavirus cases in the country and 29 fatalities have been reported.

Worldwide, coronavirus cases continue to rise dramatically, with the number of infections crossing 7 lakh on Sunday. The global death toll has crossed the 33,000 mark. 

The US has the most cases with over 142,000, followed by Italy at 97,689, China at 81,999 and Spain at 80,110. Italy has recorded the highest number of deaths with 10,779, followed by Spain's death toll of 6,803, China's 3,300 and Iran's 2,640.
