Uber driver Nazrul Islam, a resident of Gurgaon and a native of West Bengal, was rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre, where he succumbed to his injuries. He is survived by his wife and two children, aged two and four years.

The police said that after the incident, Malik, a resident of Panchsheel Park in south Delhi, fled from the spot but left his car behind. It had a Chandigarh registration number, which was later traced and Malik was arrested. The car was registered in his mother’s name.

According to the cops, Malik lost control of his vehicle, which hit the Wagon R and flung it in the air. Driver Islam, who was on his way to Vasant Vihar after dropping off a passenger in Shahpur Jat, sustained serious head injuries.

According to witnesses, the impact of the collision was so powerful that there was a blast-like sound. The rear side of the Wagon R was completely crushed and the damage to the BMW left the car unrecognisable.

After the arrest, Malik reportedly told the police that he was scared of being beaten up by the mob that had gathered around. So, he fled from the spot in an auto rickshaw. Within minutes of the accident, an Eco Sport car rammed into the stationary BMW, but the driver escaped with minor injuries.

The police have registered a case of rash and negligent driving causing death and are analysing the CCTV footage of the incident. According to the police, half of the accidents in Delhi take place at night.
