Ananya Yadav, a year-old infant from Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh, suffering from Pulmonary atresia, a congenital heart defect by birth, has been given a 2020 date for her surgery by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. Her father has now written to the Prime Minister asking for help as he is unable to pay for the treatment.

Ananya was born with the defect due to which her pulmonary valve, which is an opening on the right side of the heart that regulated blood flow from the right ventricle to the lungs, did not form properly leading to pulmonary atresia. Valve, instead of opening and closing to allow blood to travel from the heart to the lungs, a solid sheet of tissue forms. So blood can't travel by its normal route to pick up oxygen from the lungs. Instead, some blood travels to the lungs through other natural passages within the heart and its arteries.

Now, due to lack of oxygen in the blood, the infant has a blue-toned skin also known as Cyanosis.

"She was born with this defect and we have been seeing her condition get worse helplessly every day. I am unable to bear the costs of private medication and the largest hospital in the country has asked me to return after two years. I do not know what to do now," said Lal Bahadur Yadav, Ananya's father, who works as a supervisor in a private shop.

Yadav has taken his daughter to all referral hospitals from Raipur to Mumbai and now in his letter to the Prime Minister, he has sought help for his daughter's treatment citing the inability to pay for her treatments.

With over 10,000 footfall every day and 2,000 in-house patients, it is the busiest hospital in the country and the waitlist for a surgery could range between few hours and few years depending upon the severity and availability.

PATIENT WHO MANAGED TO PREPON IT

  • Ankit Vishwakarma, a student from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, suffers from Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), meaning he has a hole in the heart. He was referred to the premier institute by doctors at the BHU Medical College. Due to long waitlists at the hospital, he was given a 5.5 years late surgery date of 2024

  • After the intervention of Anupriya Patel, Minister of State in the MoH, called Ankit back to AIIMS and prepone his surgery to 2018 after conducting a probe. But this did not go down well with other patient, who feel this as an impartial move
