A 28-year-old woman was found dead at her residence in South-East Delhi’s Govindpuri area on Wednesday morning. The family of the woman alleged that she was tortured by her in-laws for dowry. The woman was married for less than 7 years, hence the enquiry was conducted by the executive magistrate after which the police have registered a case.

According to the police, a call was received at 7 am on Thursday at the Govindpuri Police Station regarding a suicide by a woman in Tughlakabad village. The deceased was identified as Rajni. Her husband Sandeep told the police that he found her hanging from the ceiling fan with her dupatta. He got her down and removed the dupatta, and then informed the police about the incident.  

A suicide note was also recovered from the house wherein the woman had stated that she is taking the extreme step as she was childless. Since they were married for less than seven years, the enquiry was conducted.

“On the statement of Balu Ram, father of the deceased woman, given to Tehsildar, a case under section 498-A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 304-B (Dowry death) was registered at Govindpuri Police Station. Her daughter was married to Sandeep in 2012 and was tortured by her in-laws as per her father’s statement,” said Chinmoy Biswal, DCP.

Extreme step

A suicide note was also recovered from the house wherein the woman had stated that she is taking the extreme step as she was childless. The body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem examination.
