A 22-year-old man who was accused of killing his wife was held from Rohini area by the police on Monday.

According to the police, the accused has been identified as Atul Pal, a native of Badayun in Uttar Pradesh was planning an escape after allegedly murdering his wife but was caught soon after he stepped out of his building. Initially, he was arrested over the suspicion of his involvement in the abduction of two girls.

"We were searching for the missing girls and he was a suspect behind their abduction. During the search, he bumped into the police while trying to escape. He was brought to the Begumpur police station where during interrogation he revealed that he has murdered his wife," said a senior police officer.

Police suspected that he was trying to mislead them with his statement but later he took the police to his residence where his wife Kanchan's body was found.

"The woman was lying on a folding bed. Pal further disclosed that he used to have frequent fights with her as he suspected her of being involved in an illicit relationship," said the officer.

Police said that the two got married in 2016. and last year Kanchan had slapped a case of dowry against him. This annoyed him and he decided to eliminate her.

"On Monday night at around 11.30 pm, the two had a heated argument. Later he returned and pretended to patch things up with her. He then took her dupatta and strangled her with it. Since his room on the third floor of the building was next to three other rooms occupied by tenants, he could not dispose of the body. He had then decided to leave the city," said the officer.

Police said that as he was trying to escape he bumped into a police patrolling team and was caught.

Pal said, despite frequent altercations, he was living with his wife due to the pressure from her family members, who live in Sultanpuri, Delhi. "He also alleged that her family members often threatened him to not leave her and assaulted him," the police officer added.
