The figure is approximately six times the number of cases which were reported a decade ago which was one a day at average in 2008.
With at least six incidents of rape reported everyday this year, the national capital has earned the name of rape capital of the nation. The figure is approximately six times the number of cases which were reported a decade ago which was one a day at average in 2008.
As per statistics provided by the Delhi Police in 2018 till October 15, total number of rapes reported was 1,731, which is six rapes a day at an average till mid October. Last year, total number of rapes reported in Delhi was 2,146 which were six rapes a day at average. The number, however, was quite less in 2008 with just 466 rapes, one rape in a day at average.
However, the data also shows that since 2012 and the famous Nirbhaya case, there has been a steep rise in the rape incidents. While in 2011 a total of 572 cases were reported, however, after which the number kept on increasing in 2012 to 1,631 and further increased to 2,199 in the year 2014.
While the police officials claim that cases of rape as per data have increased rapidly as after the famous The 2012 Delhi gang rape case involved a rape and fatal assault that occurred on 16 December 2012 in Munirka, a neighbourhood in South Delhi.
"After that incident the women have become brave enough and have started filing complaint against the accused which was not the case a decade ago. Keeping the recent rape cases in mind we have seen that in most of the cases, the accused is either a relative or a known person of the victim," said a senior police officer.
However, police have witnessed many fake cases of rape in which the victim's under some influence have filed cases on innocent accused.
"In some of the cases the victim has filed complaints due to family pressure as they have some personal enmity with the accused party. We are helpless and are forced to register a case based on the allegations," said a senior police officer.
In July this year Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal had said One Stop Centres (OSC), a scheme under the Nirbhaya Fund, is getting delayed in Delhi due to lack of coordination between officials of the Delhi government and the Union Women and Child Development Ministry. Apart from West Bengal, Delhi was another state who did not use any fund under Nirbhaya Fund.
