The operations continued through the night into Wednesday afternoon as the fire spread to adjacent areas and narrow by-lanes made the job tough for fire-fighters.
It took over 18 hours and three sorties by an Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopter to douse the fire that broke out on Tuesday evening at an illegal rubber warehouse in South Delhi's Khirki Extension area. The operations continued through the night into Wednesday afternoon as the fire spread to adjacent areas and narrow by-lanes made the job tough for fire-fighters.
It was the first time that the IAF deployed a Mi17 helicopter in an urban setting for fire-fighting operations, and it dropped approximately 8000 litres of water from the Yamuna reservoir on the blaze. Three sorties were made to contain the fire by the helicopter, which was flown by Wing Commander Pradeep Bhola. Panic spread as residents evacuated their homes. Thirteen buildings, a school and a gymnasium were evacuated. Sanjay Saini, the owner of the godown, was arrested by the police on Wednesday.
