Anxious eyes will be eagerly waiting for the outcome with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) hoping for a postponement of the tournament to ensure that the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) can go ahead.

The T20 World Cup was scheduled to take place from October 18 to November 15 in Australia, however, the country's cricketing body had earlier expressed their inability to host the tournament during that time amid COVID-19 crisis.

With the constant increase in coronavirus cases in India each day, BCCI is expected to shift the IPL 2020 abroad, with UAE being the most likely destination.

"The first step was postponement of Asia Cup, which has happened. We can only start to move ahead with our plans after the ICC announces the postponement. They have been sitting on the decision even after Cricket Australia said that they are not too keen on hosting the event," a BCCI Apex Council member was quoted as saying by PTI on conditions of anonymity.

If ICC does opt to postpone the 2020 T20 World Cup this year, it will be scheduled to take place in 2022 as India doesn't want to swap its hosting rights with Australia for 2021.

Sports across the globe took a massive hit by the coronavirus pandemic. Due to the pandemic, the 2020 edition of the IPL has been indefinitely postponed.

However, several sporting events around the world have returned to action. International cricket also resumed on July 8 when England hosted West Indies for a Test match.

Back in 2014, UAE first hosted a part of the IPL due to the general elections in India so they are not new to holding the star-studded tournament again.
