"He would always keep observing me. I kept learning from him," Kohli said.
Team India cricketer Virat Kohli has revealed what a key role the then Indian skipper MS Dhoni played in getting him India's captaincy.
Kohli's remarks came during an Instagram live session with Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin when he was asked about his transition into becoming the Team India skipper.
"From the day I came into the Indian side, I wanted to learn and was intrigued by the game. I would always be in Dhoni's ears on the field. I would be bouncing off a lot of my ideas with him, of which he would refuse plenty. But he would also discuss a few things with me if he liked an idea," Kohli told Ashwin.
"He would always keep observing me. I kept learning from him and my inquisitiveness probably gave him the belief and confidence that perhaps I was the next guy to lead the country."
"I don't think the selectors appointed me as India captain suddenly. They probably had Dhoni as a sounding board before giving me the reins. I believe Dhoni played a big role in me getting the India captaincy," he added.
The current Team India skipper also spoke on the topic of how he was appointed as the captain of the U19 side just a few days ahead of the Under-19 World Cup and claimed that he had never imagined of leading the Men In Blue in his dreams.
"I was someone who always liked taking responsibility. Then Under-19 happened and not many people know that I became captain of the Under-19 team one tour before the World Cup. We went to South Africa. That's when I became the captain and then I was given the captaincy of the Under-19 World Cup, which we won," Kohli said.
"But before that, I used to captain my club team, state teams and I used to like the responsibility. I have captained Ranji in a season with all the seniors around. I think some things are destined to be," he added.
"Becoming captain of India was not even in my wildest dream, to be honest," Kohli further stated.
