The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Sunday (October 10) announced the prize money for the upcoming Men’s T20 World Cup 2021. The winning team will take home a cash prize in excess of Rs 12.02 crore ($1.6 million). The runners-up team will be awarded a some of over Rs 6.01 crore ($800,000).
The two teams that end up as the losing semi-finalists at the T20 World Cup 2021 will get richer by Rs 3 crore ($400,000) each. The overall prize money allocated by the ICC for the Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 is in excess of Rs 42.07 crore ($5.6 million).
It is worth noting that the amount (about Rs 12 crore) which will be awarded to the winner of T20 World Cup 2021 is less than the salary of RCB captain Virat Kohli as the RCB skipper is getting Rs 17 crore for one season.
Not only this, the prize money of T20 World Cup 2021 is less than the salary of Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni and Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma as Dhoni and Rohit are getting Rs 15 crore from their respective franchises.
The teams that don’t qualify beyond the Super 12 stage will get Rs 52.59 lakhs each ($70,000).
Winning teams will get Rs 30 lakh ($40,000) for every win during the 12 matches in the Round 1 stage. The four teams that fail to qualify in Round 1 will get prize money of around Rs 30 lakh ($40,000) each. Teams that will participate in Round 1 include Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Ireland, Namibia, Netherlands, Oman, Papua New Guinea and Scotland.
Eight teams that will join the tournament in the Super 12 stage are Afghanistan, Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa and West Indies.
