‘Terrorism has no religion,’ says Shahid Afridi condemning Christchurch mosque shooting

At least one gunman killed 49 people and wounded more than 20 during Friday prayers at two New Zealand mosques. New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ahern has also described the terrorist attack as 'one of New Zealand's darkest days'.

The Bangladesh team closely escaped the shooting which led to the authorities calling off the third and final Test match at the Hagley Oval on Saturday. Bangladesh Cricket Board spokesman Jalal Yunus revealed in a statement that the team was about to enter the mosque when they heard of the shooting and immediately fled from the place.

Batsman Tamim Iqbal also expressed horror on his social media post. He wrote, "Entire team got saved from active shooters!!! Frightening experience and please keep us in your prayers #christchurchMosqueAttack".

In the wake of the attack, former Pakistani all-rounder Shahid Afridi also took to Twitter to condemn the incident. He said that he spoke to the Bangladesh team regarding their safety. He also expressed that terrorism has no religion and this act should not be bracketed as a Muslim act.

“Horrifying tragedy. #Christchuch. I found NZ one of safest, most peaceful places, people are friendly. Spoke to Tamim big relief B’desh squad/staff is safe. World must together! stop hatred! Terrorism has no religion! Prayers for bereaved families. May Allah bless the departed,” the player wrote on Twitter.

Pakistan have themselves struggled for more than a decade to revive international cricket in their home ground. The 2009 attack on the Sri Lankan team bus, which saw six members of the Lankan team wounded.

Bangladesh were to take on hosts New Zealand in Christchurch on 16 March, but the third Test has been called off.
