World Cup matches against India unnerves even the staunchest of believers in Pakistan. That’s because our noisy neighbours have never won a World Cup match against India. Nevertheless, each World Cup, ODI or T20, brings a chance at redemption for Pakistan as it will come again on October 24.

With Pakistan and India set to face each other in a mouth-watering Super 12 clash, comments, jibes and challenges from both the sides are in full flow. Responding to a Pakistani news anchor’s viral comment about the upcoming T20 match, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag decided to explain why Pakistan finds it virtually impossible to defeat India in World Cup matches.

Talking to a TV news channel, Sehwag shared his views in response to a Pakistan news anchor’s ‘tareekh badal denge’ remark ahead of the match. Replying to the noisy neighbours, Sehwag explained that there is a reason why Indian players are able to manage the pressure of such big matches better.

The explosive former Team India opener opined that the reason behind Pakistan’s lack of World Cup success against India is the lofty statements that people from the country make before matches with India. Sehwag added that India doesn’t make similar big statements.

“If I talk about the 2011 World Cup or the 2003 World Cup, we are under less pressure because our position remains better than Pakistan in the World Cup. In my opinion, when we play with that attitude, we never give big statements,” Sehwag continued, “There are always some big statements from the Pakistani side like he [Pakistani news anchor] said at the starting of his show that “We are going to change the date”. India never says such things because they go better prepared. And when you go better prepared, you already know what the result would be.”

However, Sehwag did note that Pakistan has better odds of defeating India in T20 matches compared to the longer 50-over ODIs. He said, “But if we talk about the current scenario and this format then I think this is where Pakistan always has more chances because they might not play that well in the longer 50-over format. In this format, even one player can defeat any team. But still, Pakistan hasn’t been able to do that, we’ll see what happens on the 24th.”
