As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 was coming to an end, fans were told that former Indian skipper MS Dhoni would be the mentor for the India camp at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE.

The news surely gave hope to a lot of cricket fans believing it could change India's fortunes and they would lift the trophy under Virat Kohli's captaincy. However, former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar feel MS Dhoni can only help Team India work on strategies, but it will be the player's responsibility to perform on the field of play.

The now commentator also gave the opinion that Dhoni, being a mentor, can't do much from the dressing room and it will all depend on how the cricketers handle pressure in the middle.

"Mentors can't do much. Yes, he can help you prepare in the change room as it's a fast-paced game and if needed, help you tweak the tactic. Maybe speak to batters and bowlers during a time-out, so the move to employ Dhoni is a good one but Dhoni will be in the change room.

"It's the players who have to perform the actual task in the middle. How they handle pressure would determine what the result will be," Gavaskar was quoted as saying to Aaj Tak.

India did play two warm-up matches before their clash against Pakistan on October 24 in Dubai. The Men in Blue had defeated England and Australia in the warm-ups and the side will look to continue the winning momentum in the Super 12s on Sunday when they face Babar Azam's Pakistan.

The multi-nation tournament will also be Virat Kohli's last outing as a skipper for India in the limited-overs format. Talking about the same, Gavaskar said that after the mega event, Kohli will be able to play cricket with a free mind.

"When you become a captain, you can't just think about yourself, he has to speak to a batter who is going through a bad patch or discuss strategies with a bowler. Amid all this, one tends to neglect his own form. When you don't have that pressure, you can focus on your own game. I think it will be good for Virat that after T20 World Cup, he doesn't have to think about responsibilities," he added.
