The debate surrounding the next wicketkeeper batsman of the Indian cricket team is gaining tremendous momentum. Ever since the retirement of MS Dhoni in August 2020, the race for this slot has intensified. KL Rahul is more-or-less the No.1 choice when it comes to ODIs and T20Is but in the Tests, there is a big race between Wriddhiman Saha and Rishabh Pant. The Delhi wicketkeeper seemed to have been the No.1 choice after great performances in England and Australia but he has suffered a dip in form. With Wriddhiman Saha also doing well in the IPL, it will be interesting to see who is picked by the Indian cricket team management for the Tests.

However, in an interaction with PTI, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has said that Wriddhiman Saha and Rishabh Pant are the two best wicketkeeper batsmen in the country currently. Pant did not have a good IPL but Ganguly backed him to the hilt. “He (Pant) and Wriddhiman Saha are our two best wicketkeeper-batsmen in the country. Don’t worry. His bat swing will come back. He is a young guy and all of us need to guide him. He’s got tremendous talent. Rishabh will be fine,” Ganguly said.

No one can replace Dhoni

KL Rahul, who is the vice-captain for the Indian cricket team for the Australia series, has said no one can replace MS Dhoni and that his role as a wicketkeeper batsman and captain has laid the blueprint for future generations to emulate. One of the major points in MS Dhoni’s captaincy was how he managed to guide the spinners behind the wicket as well as in his captaincy.

Speaking in the pre-match press conference, KL Rahul said he would try to follow MS Dhoni’s footsteps when it comes to guiding the spinners. “With players like Yuzi (Yuzvendra Chahal), Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja) and Kuldeep (Yadav) and the other spinners of the team, we have a decent friendship, decent understanding in the middle. I think I will probably give them feedback on what can be a better length or better pace to bowl at,” KL Rahul said as he was sporting the 92 Retro Jersey.

India’s first match will be against Australia on November 27 in Sydney.
