In the first Test match against Sri Lanka, Usman Khawaja scored his first double century, making the most of the good batting conditions in Galle. He helped Australia reach a noteworthy total after choosing to bat first, scoring an outstanding 232 runs before being dismissed in the first innings. In addition to breaking several milestones, Khawaja surpassed legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar to become the oldest player in Sri Lanka to hit a double century.

In April 2010, when Tendulkar was 37 years old, he scored 203 runs off 347 balls in Colombo. India scored 707 runs in their first innings after that outstanding innings, which resulted in a tie. After 15 years, Khawaja reached the double hundred milestone at the age of 38, breaking Tendulkar's record.

Khawaja also broke Justin Langer's previous record of 166 runs, becoming the first Australian to reach a double century in Sri Lanka. Additionally, Khawaja's 232 runs created a new record for the highest individual score by an Australian against Sri Lanka in Test cricket, surpassing Michael Slater's 219 runs at home.

Earlier, Steve Smith shattered several records as he notched up his 35th Test century on Day 1 of the match. He also reached the significant milestone of 10,000 runs in Test cricket, placing him among a select group of elite players. Smith is now the second-fastest Australian to achieve this, following Ricky Ponting, and the fourth overall. Additionally, he is only the sixth player to reach this milestone while serving as captain. Smith took on the captaincy after Pat Cummins stepped back from the series.

Australia is currently in a commanding position against Sri Lanka in the first Test, with the pitch expected to deteriorate, batting last in Galle will be quite challenging. As a result, Australia is looking to bat for an extended period, possibly declaring after crossing the 600-run mark. The batting conditions are likely to become more difficult as the match unfolds.
