Misbah-ul-Haq had inherited the reigns of the Pakistan cricket team in 2019 at a time when the side had surrendered their No.1 ranking in T20Is and had failed to make it to the knock-out stages of the ICC Cricket World Cup. Following the team’s 2-1 loss to England before Misbah’s reign, the former Pakistan captain said that a turnaround will be affected. However, 12 months into his reign and criticism of Misbah-ul-Haq’s tactics have come to the fore. Pakistan have won two Tests and lost three, won two ODIs and only three T20Is, out of 12 played.

There are reports that Misbah is not taking responsibility for the losses and this has earned the wrath of Shoaib Akhtar, the former Pakistan pacer. In an interview to a TV channel, Akhtar has said Misbah should take more responsibility and not give excuses.

“Honest and strong people don’t complain but take decisions. If I had been in his place, I would have said that it is my fault, I will set it right. That is the straight point. He should have said that what had happened earlier or not happened is left behind, and now that I am at the job, I will improve things. Playing around here and there is probably Misbah but this is not me. I am not like that. Whatever has happened, now that you are there, you need to say with confidence that you are there now, you will see how to set things right,” Akhtar said.

Downward slide

When Misbah took over as the reigns, Pakistan slipped from the top spot to fourth in the T20I rankings. In the series against England, they lost a Test series for the first time in 10 years while in the Twenty20 Internationals, they tied the series 1-1.

During the series in Australia, Pakistan suffered their 14th consecutive loss and they have only been helped by wins against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh at home.
