The topic of cricket helmets and their design has been in scrutiny ever since the tragedy of November 25, 2014 in which Phillip Hughes was struck by a bouncer on the side of the neck which resulted in his death. Hughes’ death resulted in massive changes for batsmen safety and it began with the helmet. In addition to the grill, there was now a side bar which offered as a protective layer in case the ball hit the back of the neck. The addition of the extra layer has given more security to the batsman and has saved many from potential injuries. However, during the Pakistan Super League encounter between Multan Sultans and Karachi Kings in the Qualifier, Shahid Afridi, Pakistan’s former talismanic allrounder was spotted with a strange looking helmet. The top part of the grille was removed. This was probably to ensure that he had better vision but it soon becoming a major talking point, with the question of safety being raised about. There was also concerns that Afridi could suffer a serious injury if he misses a bouncer.

The commentators raised some questions but Jonty Rhodes, who was working with Kings XI Punjab and will now coach Sweden in cricket, revealed that he had used such a helmet recently as it allowed him a proper vision of the bowler and his hand while delivering the ball.“I played a couple of months ago and I had an issue with the top bar of the grille. I understand where he’s at, I couldn’t see through it either. So, I did get mine ground down by from a safety point of view, I was facing blokes like this,” Rhodes revealed on commentary. Afridi managed just 12 runs off 12 balls as Multan Sultans lost in the Qualifier to Karachi Kings.

Karachi, Lahore win

Karachi Kings needed seven runs in the final over bowled by Mohammad Ilyas in the First Qualifier of the Pakistan Super League 2020 clash against Multan Sultans in Karachi. Sohail Tanvir had already wrecked the Karachi Kings batting order by taking 3/25. In the final over, Mohammad Amir was dismissed by Mohammad Ilyas and when only two runs were taken off three balls, Karachi Kings needed five runs off the last ball. However, Imad Wasim smashed a boundary to deep square leg as the match headed into the Super Over.

In the Super Over, Sherfane Rutherford hit a four and a six off Sohail Tanvir as Karachi Kings needed to defend 14 off the Super Over. Mohammad Amir delivered a perfect over and Karachi Kings entered the Pakistan Super League final for the first time ever. They will be now awaiting the winner of the second Eliminator between Multan Sultans and Lahore Qalandars, with the Lahore Qalandars knocking out two-time finalists Peshawar Zalmi in the other Eliminator.
