Former Australia skipper Steve Smith played his first match in South Africa after the infamous 2018 "sandpaper controversy" on Saturday (February 22) during his side's 107-run win over the Proteas at the Wanderers.
Smith played an entertaining 32-ball 45 knock for the Aussies and guided the kangaroos to victory in the first T20I clash of the three-match series against South Africa.
However, the 30-year-old was greeted with a lot of booing from the spectators at the stadium after he managed to hit a boundary off Dale Steyn's delivery that had bounced twice on the pitch before reaching the bat.
Even though the umpire immediately ruled out the runs the fans inside the stadium were fuming with it and kept on booing the Australian batsman.
In fact, two spectators were spotted in the stands who brought placards which read: "Sandpaper for sale. Pocket-sized for extra discreetness."
David Warner, who was also involved in the same ball-tampering scandal, managed to score just 4 runs before losing his wicket on the day as the visitors hoisted a total of 196 for 6.
In chase of a target score of 197, the home side failed miserably and crumbled to 89 all - their lest total in T20Is - out as Ashton Agar bagged a hat trick and finished with staggering figures of 5 for 24
Agar also became the second Australian bowler ever to register a T20I hat-trick since Brett Lee ( during 2007/8 against Bangladesh in Cape Town).
