Ravindra Jadeja has been the Indian cricket team's ultimate x-factor in the two Tests against Australia in Melbourne and Sydney. In the Boxing Day Test, Ravindra Jadeja took a superb catch off Matthew Wade and shared a brilliant partnership with skipper Ajinkya Rahane as India won the Test in grand style. In the Sydney Test, Ravindra Jadeja showed his class by taking four wickets and effecting a brilliant run-out of Steve Smith for 131 as social media went into overdrive in prasing Ravindra Jadeja's 'jaddu' (magic) effort. With the bat, he ensured that India's deficit would be less than 100 as he slammed a superb cameo.

However, during the course of his knock, Ravindra Jadeja was hit on the thumb by a short ball from Mitchell Starc and the injury resulted in a dislocated thumb. However, the nature of the injury was serious enough that Ravindra Jadeja had to undergo surgery in Sydney. This has resulted in Ravindra Jadeja missing the Brisbane Test as well as being in doubt for the four-Test series against England beginning in February. Taking to his official Instagram account, Ravindra Jadeja uploaded a photo where his left thumb was plastered and captioned, "Out of action for a while.surgery completed. But will soon return with a bang."

Injury woes for India

The injury to Ravindra Jadeja is another addition to the long list of injury woes for India. Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the Brisbane Test due to an abdominal strain while Mayank Agarwal is in doubt due to a hand injury. Hanuma Vihari has also been ruled out due to a grade 2 hamstring tear while there is doubt even over the fitness of Ravichandran Ashwin who suffered a back injury.

Before the start of the series, Ishant Sharma was ruled out of the tour while Mohammed Shami suffered a blow to his right arm from Pat Cummins in the Adelaide Test which required surgery. The Indian cricket team will struggle to find a proper balance to their playing 11 heading into the Brisbane Test. Australia have not lost in Brisbane since 1988.
