The day one action of the second Test match between India and New Zealand at Hagley Oval in Christchurch came to an end on Saturday (February 29).

The home side finished the day on top thanks to some class bowling from their pacer.

Earlier in the day, Kiwi skipper Kane Willaimson won the toss and invited India to bat first.

Team India got off to a poor start as opener Mayank Agarwal (7) was dismissed early on in the sixth over. However, Prithvi Shaw kept on going and formed an economic partnership with Cheteshawar Pujara for the second wicket.

Shaw looked like a man on a mission as he played some flamboyant shots against a steaming Kiwi pace attack. The Mumbai batter played some eye-catching strokes and secured his second Test half-century off 61 delivers.

With this, the youngster also became the 2nd youngest Indian batsman after Sachin Tendulkar to smash a 50 in Tests in New Zealand.

But, his stay at the crease was cut short right after by Kyle Jamieson who brought an end to Shaw's surging innings of 54 runs off 64 balls just moments before lunch thanks to Latham.

India skipper Virat Kohli (3) and vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane (7) had yet another poor run with the bat as Tim Southee dismissed the two to bring the hosts back into the game, reducing India to 113/4.

Hanuma Vihari then came in and formed a fighting partnership with Pujara for the fifth wicket as both batsmen brought up their individual half-centuries.

However, Neil Wagner came up with the much-needed breakthrough for his side just moments before the tea break and removed Vihari on 55.

The fall of wickets continued as Kyle Jamieson bagged his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket by dismissing Cheteshwar Pujara (54), Rishabh Pant (12), Umesh Yadav (0) and Ravindra Jadeja (9) in quick successions.

Mohammed Shami (16) provided some late boost with the bat but Boult knocked out his stumps to bundle out India for 242/10.

In reply, openers Tom Latham (27*) and Tom Blundell (29*) provided the Blackcaps with a solid start as the home side ended the day on 63/0, trailing India by 179 runs.
