MS Dhoni took over the captaincy of the Indian cricket team at a time when the side were in turmoil. India had crashed out in the opening round of the 2007 World Cup and the team environment was strained due to the acrimonious relationship some players had towards their coach Greg Chappell. It was at this time that a young lad from Ranchi stepped up and proceeded to change the fortunes of the Indian cricket team. MS Dhoni’s tactical acumen turned India around and they won the 2007 World T20. Following the win, India’s chart grew upwards and they became the superpower of modern cricket.

However, the main factor behind MS Dhoni’s appointment as India cricket team captain has now been revealed. Dhoni’s elevation to captaincy would not have been possible had it not been for Sachin Tendulkar observing his match-reading skills.

In an interaction, Sachin Tendulkar said, “I observed his match reading and I came to the conclusion that he had a good cricketing brain so I suggested to the board that this is what I feel. MS should be the next one to take charge. Whatever I was thinking and whatever he thought, we were more or less on the same page. If I have to convince you about something, I have to be on your page and that is exactly what happened with MS. We both were thinking alike and that's why I suggested he should be the one.”

Understanding responsibility

When Dhoni took over as the captain of the side in 2008, Tendulkar had already completed 19 years in international cricket. However, India’s greatest batsman said he understood his responsibility and he was 100 percent behind the captain in decision-making.

“They looked up to me as an elder brother and it was my duty to guide them and tell them what I feel and also tell them equally. It could not be one-way traffic that I tell them and they listen to me. We should have kind of relationship that they should also be able to tell you what they feel and I believed in that,” Tendulkar said.
