Miss-understanding! When Delhi messed up two chances to run out Faf Du Plessis & Shane Watson on same ball - Watch

Delhi Capitals came close but failed to reach the final of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 after losing to Chennai Super Kings in the Qualifier 2 on Friday.

CSK openers Faf du Plessis and Shane Watson scored fifties as Chennai had a brilliant start chasing a modest total of 148 runs to win. Their 81-run opening partnership was the key as Chennai reached the target with 6 balls and 6 wickets to spare.

However, it could have very different situation if Delhi had taken their chance in the very first over of the Chennai innings. In a sequence of event which can only be described as 'comedy of errors, Delhi missed the chance to run out Faf du Plessis and Shane Watson on the same ball.

During the first over of the chase, both batsmen were stuck in the middle of the pitch after calling incorrectly for a single. However, Delhi fielders missed the chance to hit the wickets at both ends. 

Faf tapped the ball towards point and called for the run before changing his mind after taking a couple of strides. Watson however was more than halfway down the 22 yards looking for the single and was trapped midway down the pitch as Axar Patel fired the throw at the non striker’s end. The throw was collected by Collin Munro, who chose to fire in a wayward throw towards the wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant at the opposite end instead of going for the stumps himself. Pant made a diving effort to stop the ball but missed and there was enough time for the batsmen to sneak in the extra run.

The mistake cost them dearly as both batsmen scored half-centuries and laid the foundation for Chennai's win.
