Misbah ul Haq, the former Pakistan cricket team captain and the current head coach and chief selector of the team, is all set to relinquish the role of Pakistan chief selector in a press conference. According to a report in ESPNCricinfo, Misbah ul Haq had stated that he had felt tremendous pressure in trying to fulfill two roles. However, the move might have been forced as the new code of ethics constituted by the Pakistan Cricket Board eliminates any person in a dual capacity role.

When Misbah ul Haq retired from international cricket in 2017, he donned the dual hat of chief selector and head coach in the 2019 season and he had mixed success. In the tour to Australia in 2019, Pakistan were whitewashed 2-0 for the fifth consecutive time Down Under as they lost their 14th consecutive Test in Australia. At that time in 2019, there was no code of ethics in place.

However, in 2020 and with many questions raised on the conflict of interest situation, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) instituted a new code of ethics to remove issues arising from conflict of interest. In Misbah's case, the conflict of interest was of him being selector and coach of the men's side.

Mixed success for Pakistan

Although he achieved success in the Test series against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh who toured Pakistan after a gap of more than a decade, his away performances were poor. Apart from the 0-2 drubbing against Australia, Pakistan lost the Old Trafford Test by three wickets and the remaining two Tests in Southampton were drawn as Pakistan lost a Test series for the first time to England since 2010.

Misbah ul Haq has been recently meeting Prime Minister Imran Khan over the situation regarding departmental teams participation in the domestic circuit. Recently, when the new domestic schedule was been formulated, there was no place for departmental sides and there was more focus on zonal teams. a delegation that included Misbah-ul-Haq, Azhar Ali and Mohammad Hafeez, made a bid to change Imran Khan’s mind about the new structure which has already cost over 400 cricketers their jobs. However, they failed to make any headway as Prime Minister Imran Khan insisted that the new regional model was "the right way".
