When India was bowled out for 36 in the Pink Ball Test against Australia in Adelaide, there were many players who predicted that the India national cricket team would be whitewashed 0-4. The signs were ominous for the side, with Virat Kohli leaving the team to be on paternity leave for the birth of his child. Mohammed Shami was injured and as the rest of the series progressed, the injury list simply piled up. Yet, the Indian cricket team defied the odds. Under the calm leadership of Ajinkya Rahane, the Indian cricket team completely overcame the odds and registered a memorable 2-1 series win in Australia. The win was sweeter as they managed to end Australia's three-decade hold on the Gabba in Brisbane.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph, former England skipper Michael Vaughan admitted that there was egg on his face after he had gotten his prediction wrong. "I predicted Australia would win the series 4-0 after Adelaide, and with good reason. India looked shot after that match and with all the selection issues they had, even India's most one-eyed fans would not have predicted a comeback. Well, they have left me with egg on my face. But honestly? I don't care. When you have cricket that good, and remarkable performances from rookie players such as Shubman Gill, Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur, I have no problem in being proved wrong," Michael Vaughan wrote.

Hope for England

With the Indian cricket team wearing down Australia and their bowlers bowling with tremendous discipline, India became the second team after South Africa to win back-to-back series in Australia. The performance of the Indian cricket team has given Michael Vaughan the hope that Joe Root's England cricket team can go on and win the Ashes 2021/22 contest Down Under. England has not won a Test in Australia for the last 10 years, having been whitewashed 5-0 in the 2013/14 series as well as being hammered 0-4 in the 2017/18 series.

"This is a result that will pose some serious questions of Australia and give England real hope for the Ashes. Joe Root needs to win a series Down Under and India has proved that there are vulnerabilities in this Australian side - ones that we didn't really know existed a month or so ago. That should all give England encouragement as they seek a first series win in Australia since 2011. Less promisingly, the events of the last few weeks underline just how difficult it will be for them in India next month," Michael Vaughan said.
