Delhi Capitals have been on an upward trend after a change of name since 2019. As soon as the Daredevils became the Capitals taking the most important characteristic of the city they are based in, the Delhi franchise has suddenly become the team to beat in the eight-team tournament for the past two years.

After they lost to the Chennai Super Kings in the Qualifier 2 in the 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Shreyas Iyer-led side did some excellent buying at the next auction for the delayed 2020 season and the men in blue bore fruits immediately.

While, the South African pace duo of Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje were the highlights, players like Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Shikhar Dhawan and Marcus Stoinis also shined for the Capitals as they made an IPL final for the first time in the 13-year history of the lucrative league. However, Delhi as always would look to plug a couple of holes here and there in their line-up to better their 2020 feat and go for the jugular in the upcoming season of the league.

Delhi Capitals IPL 2020 Squad

Shreyas Iyer(c), Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant, Kagiso Rabada, Prithvi Shaw, Ajinkya Rahane, Ishant Sharma, Axar Patel, Shimron Hetmyer, Alex Carey, Marcus Stoinis, Anrich Nortje, Daniel Sams, Avesh Khan, Harshal Patel, Mohit Sharma, Ravichandran Ashwin, Tushar Deshpande, Lalit Yadav, Pravin Dubey, Keemo Paul, Sandeep Lamichhane.

Players that could be retained

While the Indian batting trio of Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant would be certainly retained. The Capitals will also be showing faith in their overseas pace options in Rabada, Nortje and Australian all-rounder Daniel Sams, who has been on fire with the bat in the ongoing Big Bash League.

Along with them, Delhi will also retain their experienced home-grown spin trio of Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin and Amit Mishra and in the pace department only Ishant Sharma seems the likely retention, and they might also show some faith in Harshal Patel as well. Among overseas options, Delhi will most likely retain Marcus Stoinis, who won them at least three games on his own.

Players that could be released

The low returns of Prithvi Shaw and Ajinkya Rahane could see them leaving the Delhi side along with overseas batting duo of Alex Carey and Shimron Hetmyer. Capitals will also look at a revamp in their Indian fast bowling stocks which would mean them releasing Avesh Khan and Tushar Deshpande. West Indies all-rounder Keemo Paul could also find his name in the auction list, while Nepal leg-spinner who didn't get a single game in the 2020 edition, might also be released from the Delhi squad.
