After a break of nearly four months, Australia and Delhi Capitals batsman Steve Smith will return to competitive cricket with the second phase of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in a long season ahead followed by ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021 and the Ashes.

Smith, after serving his six-day quarantine finally got to training on Friday evening and was excited to get back into the IPL and was hoping that he and the Delhi Capitals can just pick up from where they left off having won six out of the eight games they played and are sitting pretty at the top of the table.

Talking on Delhi Capitals' YouTube channel, Smith said, "Hopefully you can just pick up where you left off. That would be ideal. But reality is, it's been a couple of months since we've played together. So, I guess just building again and hopefully playing our best cricket come the final."

Talking about the team, Smith said that the team will be strengthened by Shreyas Iyer's return, who missed out in the first half of the IPL due to shoulder surgery.

"The squad's great. Obviously got the addition now of Shreyas back into the mix, which adds a lot more to us. He's a quality player and good to see him back out in the park," Smith further added.

Smith, who played six games for the last year's finalists scored 104 runs at an average of 26 with a best of 34*. The star player suggested that the Capitals still haven't played their best yet and have got plenty left in the tank, come the business end of the tournament.

"We're playing some good cricket, getting the results we're after. Actually, probably not playing as good a cricket as we would have liked, which is a plus for us. I think we still have got plenty left in the tank," Smith said.

The Capitals will resume their IPL 2021 campaign against the Sunrisers Hyderabad on September 22 in Dubai.
