The Delhi Capitals have all but decided to stay with Rishabh Pant as their captain for the remaining matches of the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to be held in the UAE starting September 19. Pant was appointed the skipper for the last year's runners-up in Shreyas Iyer's absence when the latter underwent shoulder injury sustained during the ODI series against England in March.
After rest and rehabilitation for four months, Iyer has now recovered from the surgery and is raring to go in the second half of the 14th edition of the IPL. However, the management has settled with Pant as the captain. As reported by Cricbuzz, the decision is seen as the way forward and they don't want to take chance with Iyer, who hasn't played a competitive game since March this year.
Now, a source has told the news agency PTI that the host broadcasters shot a few promos for the season and it was done in the gap between the third and the fourth Test match with the IPL captain currently in the UK for the Test series. Along with Virat Kohli (Royal Challengers Bangalore), Rohit Sharma (Mumbai Indians) and KL Rahul (Punjab Kings), Rishabh Pant was also there.
"Unless the BCCI-IPL management is aware of any other name of captain for DC franchise, the promos wouldn't have been shot. Therefore, whether DC announces it now or after a few days, Pant is likely to lead the DC for the remaining matches in the season," the source added.
Iyer, who arrived in the UAE one week prior to the Capitals' scheduled arrival had recently shared his excitement to play in the IPL, followed by the T20 World Cup after being away from the game for a long period of time.
Delhi Capitals were in sensational form this year, continuing from their last season when they made their first-ever final in 13 seasons of the league. The Capitals are at the top of the table with six wins out of the eight games they have played and will resume their campaign against the Sunrisers Hyderabad on September 22.
