IPL 2021: Maxwell-AB de Villiers fry KKR in Chennai heat, put 204 on the board for RCB

'The Big Show' has finally arrived in the IPL after a gap of seven years as all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has found his big-hitting mojo with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) as he and AB de Villiers together made a mockery of Kolkata Knight Riders bowling attack on what was a slow Chennai track. Maxwell with 78 and AB de Villiers with 76* helped RCB get 204 in their 20 overs.
Yes, it was a better track at Chennai but it looked like the two superstars of the game were batting on a different wicket at all. Balls stopping, turning and gripping on the surface? What's that? Sure, RCB didn't have a great start losing skipper Virat Kohli and No 3 batsman Rajat Patidar to mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy's spin, but what Glenn Maxwell did after that was simply sensational.
No bowler was pardoned as the hard-hitting took apart every bowler after getting his eyes in. Maxwell brought up his fifty in just 27 balls and was getting enough support from the left-handed Devdutt Padikkal to take the innings forward, who was playing run-a-ball.
Padikkal fell in the 12th over and the duo had stitched an 86-run partnership in just 55 balls. And, then came the destroyer AB de Villiers. It was the last time KKR camp smiled in that innings as it was followed by a carnage. As, till Padikkal was there, boundaries were flowing from one end, his wicket opened the floodgates.
The ageless South African was in his own shell and blasted Kolkata Knight Riders bowlers and he was severe on their death specialist, Andre Russell. Even though Maxwell soon got out for a well-made 78 off just 49 balls, hitting nine fours and three sixes, de Villiers made KKR pay heavy price.
On the Chennai track, de Villiers played an innings at a strike rate of 223 hitting the same number of boundaries as Maxwell, scoring 76 runs in just 34 runs. To his own admission, he surprised himself and RCB everyone scoring a 204-run total in Chennai, where the teams are struggling to chase even 150.
