IPL 2021: Decoding CSK's superlative consistency post team's 11th play-off berth

An Indian Premier League (IPL) season play-off lineup is usually not complete without Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the same holds true for this season too.

Led by their 'Captain Cool' MS Dhoni, the 'Whistle Podu' brigade have lived up to their billing of being arguably the most consistent teams in the flagship T20 league by securing a record extending eleventh berth in the play-offs.

A win over bottom-placed Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Sept 30th (Thursday) had the 'Men In Yellow' cement their spot in the last four of the ongoing season. It could not have been a better sight for the CSK fans to have 'Thala' Dhoni finishing off the game against SRH in his signature style with a six.

A lookback at CSK's glittering record in the Indian Premier League is a testament of their superlative consistency in the marquee T20 league. 11 play-off berths in 12 seasons makes them a runaway leader with respect to play-off appearances. The rare blip in an amazing IPL play-off streak was them not reaching the last four in the previous season (IPL 2020).

If one were to closely look at CSK's winning formula, there is a sure-shot recipe behind their enormous success. Under the aegis of an astute captain in MS Dhoni and clever strategist in Stephen Fleming, CSK have been fine-tuned into a well oiled winning machine.

The 3-time IPL champions have a certain method to their madness which makes them a force to reckon with. Season after season, CSK have played with a set combination of players backed to the hilt by the franchise's think tank. Much like 5-time champions Mumbai Indians, CSK do not believe in much chopping and changing and it has paid them huge dividends.

At the heart of the team lies the Indian troika of MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja who have been invaluable assets to the team for almost a decade.

A closer look at highly successful CSK teams over the years have seen their perfect team combinations being the underlying factor behind their great success. All the puzzles in the jigsaw seem to fit in perfectly.

Talk about belligerent openers and the team has been fortunate to have the best-in-class batsmen with Matthew Hayden, Murali Vijay, Michael Hussey and Faf Du Plessis providing the pyrotechnics to give quick fire starts up the order. 

Since the inception of the league, the CSK middle order had a stamp of class and experience with formidable batsmen in Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni and Dwayne Bravo. 

Over the years, the team has been lent good balance and depth with valuable all-rounders like Dwyane Bravo, Shane Watson, Ravindra Jadeja, Albie Morkel and Sam Curran.

MS Dhoni's signature captaincy style of controlling the game with spinners has been a master craft. Over the years, a plethora of spin wizards like R Ashwin, Muttiah Muralitharan, Shadab Jakati, Ravindra Jadeja and Imran Tahir have cast a web around prominent batting lineups on rank turning pitches in the subcontinent.

While spin has been their main armoury, CSK have been blessed to have quality pacers in their ranks like Doug Bollinger, Lakshmipathy Balaji, Mohit Sharma and Deepak Chahar, all of whom have picked up a bagful of wickets in title-winning seasons.  

Last but most importantly, CSK could not have asked for a better skipper than MS Dhoni to lead the franchise in the IPL. Dhoni's uncanny cricketing acumen to craft match-winning strategies with the given resources at his disposal has indeed been their ace weapon. 

With yet another play-off berth secured after 18 points in the bank, CSK would like to end the round-robin stage in pole position with an aim to have two cracks at the final. 

Given that the first hurdle of making it to the play-offs has been crossed, there is not an iota of doubt that a fourth IPL title will very much be on the sights of Dhoni and Co.
