The defending champions Mumbai Indians were back on the track after an indifferent start in the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The slow Chennai tracks didn't really help MI's cause as they won only two of their five games played there but the moment their caravan shifted to a better surface and small ground in Delhi, the five-time champions won both the games they played before the suspension of the league midway during the season.

Chennai Super Kings, on the other hand, looked like a possessed side in the first half, bulldozing sides left, right and centre, as they will be looking to put behind the horrors of the last season, played in the UAE as they have an opportunity to go to the top of the table.

The Mumbai Indians have had the advantage over the Chennai Super Kings in the last five games between the two sides as they have won four games. But the first game after the resumption of the 14th edition promises to be a cracker between two quality outfits.

Head-to-head: 31 games; MI - 19, CSK - 12

The Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Super Kings have faced each other 31 times in the 11 seasons of the IPL since 2008 (CSK were banned for a couple of seasons in 2016, 2017) and the men in blue have had the upper hand with 19 wins, while CSK have won 12 out of those 31 encounters.

The last time these two sides met earlier this season it was a run-fest as Kieron Pollard's unbeaten innings of 87 runs off just 34 balls helped the Mumbai Indians chase down a mammoth total of 219 runs after Chennai Super Kings scored 218 runs owing to contributions from Ambati Rayudu, Faf du Plessis and Moeen Ali.

Suresh Raina leads the most runs list

Chennai Super Kings batsman Suresh Raina is the leading run-getter in the CSK vs MI games, scoring 732 runs. Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma is second in the list with 693 runs to his name against the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.

Lasith Malinga is the leading wicket-taker

Lasith Malinga, the former Mumbai Indians pacer and the current leading wicket-taker in the history of the IPL has the most wickets to his name in CSK vs MI games, with 37 scalps. All-rounder Dwayne Bravo, who represented Mumbai Indians in the first three seasons of the IPL and has been with CSK since 2011 is in the second position with 27 wickets. Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, who has represented both sides in the past has 26 wickets to his name in this fixture.
